Granulation Technique with Linda Lewin - Goldsmiths' Centre

Join Linda Lewin at the Goldsmiths’ Centre in London and learn about the ancient technique of granulation in this 3 day hands on workshop.

Booking: Learn more and book directly on the Goldsmiths’ Centre website.

From the Goldsmiths’ Centre:

Granulation is the oldest decorative metalwork technique known to mankind. Tiny grains or spheres of precious metal appear to be held by magic to the metal’s surface without using solid attachments or even solder. The Etruscans are the acknowledged masters of the granulation process and to this day their exquisite work can still be admired in many museums around the world.

[…]

Linda Lewin will guide you to discover and apply the ancient granulation technique in your own designs. She will assist you to develop your skills through practice and the completion of samples. Although the technology required is simple, the skill level required to fully exploit this technique is high and can be acquired with continuous practice.

There will be an optional opportunity to visit the British Museum on Friday 4 April after the course at 4.30pm. For course participants who wish to join, the group will depart together from the Goldsmiths’ Centre and travel to the British Museum by taxi. Linda will lead the group at the museum, exploring inspiring historical pieces which incorporate the ancient technique of granulation.

Our small class size offers you the chance to get group tuition as well as individual guidance on a 1:1 basis with your tutor, allowing you to receive tailored advice to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the ancient technique of granulation.

Brooch and earrings in silver with 22ct. gold granulation. Linda Lewin.

The aim of this course is to give students a theoretical grounding and guided practical experience of granulation and show how the technique is relevant to contemporary design. Students will take away the information and experience necessary to develop the technique of granulation in their work.

Granulation samples in silver

On the course students will:

  • learn to use a mouth blow torch.

  • learn to make granules on a charcoal block.

  • learn to fuse granules without adding solder. Chemical soldering.

  • consider how the technique of granulation is relevant to their work.

Chemical soldering silver granules with a reducing flame. The mouth blow torch with propane gas is an ideal way to produce a perfectly controlled reducing flame which is  requisite for chemical soldering.

We begin the course with a brief overview of granulation including history and the theory of soldering quickly moving on to making granules and sample designs in silver with the option of progressing onto 22ct. gold if and when the students feel ready. All students will complete a range of samples to take home and some students may complete a small piece such as a pendant or pair of earrings. There will be plenty of one to one tuition, opportunities to ask questions and sharing with fellow students.

We provide tools but if you prefer to bring hand tools you are very welcome. You may bring your own silver or it can be ordered for you. If you decide to work in gold you must bring your own but I can advise you what to order.

I talk to all students prior to the course to answer your questions and make sure preparation is in place for a quick start.

You will receive a charcoal block, paintbrush and a bottle of fusing liquid to take home.

Teaching time will be from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Students will have unsupervised workshop access until 7:30 pm.

Tea, coffee and a simple lunch are provided. I can recommend convenient places to stay overnight if needed and there are beautiful country walks, cycling and fishing if you have time to spare.
